Overview:
This year in social studies class, students will begin with the Civil War, and continue throughout American history until the present day. Students will reflect upon people and events from the past who have taken a stand that have had an impact on their lives today. Students will also reflect upon their own personal histories to learn where they have been, so that they may see where they are going through several multimedia projects.

Assignments:
Each chapter is made up of typically 3-5 smaller lessons that break down the big idea of the chapter into smaller pieces. During each lesson, students will be creating a graphic organizer, completing a notes packet, as well as answering review questions.

Assessments:
At the conclusion of each lesson, the students will complete a graphic organizer quiz on which they may use their completed graphic organizer during the quiz. At the end of the chapter, there will be a test that covers the entire chapter.

Projects:
Students will be given a selection of projects to choose from for each chapter project. These projects will be presented to the class and graded using a rubric. Aside from chapter projects, students will also complete a personal history project at the beginning of the school year, as well as a a taking a stand project at the end of the school year. The students may also have the opportunity to participate in local history fairs throughout the year.

Extra Credit:
Students will have the opportunity to earn up to 100 extra credit points within each quarter. Students can find up to 4 current event articles from either a newspaper, magazine, or Newsela, read the article, and complete a worksheet for the article. The worksheet is comprised of the title of the article, a one paragraph (5 sentence) summary of the article, and a one paragraph (5 sentence) opinion about the article. Attach the article to the worksheet and turn it in for 25 extra credit points.
