Overview:
This year in literature class, students will use novels to develop a range of reading and a level of text complexity. To do this, students will be able to identify key ideas and details by citing textual evidence to support analysis of the text, to analyze the craft and structure by determining the meaning of words and phrases as well as analyzing the author's point of view, and to integrate knowledge and ideas by comparing and contrasting texts in different forms and genres.

Below is a list of novels to be read, discussed, and analyzed throughout the school year. Most novels will be read in class with discussion and analysis of the text being completed both in class and at home. Depending on the timeliness of the completion of novels, some may be added/removed from the list below.

Accelerated Reading:
Each quarter, students are required to read a minimum of 2 Accelerated Reading books by a designated due date. The students have until the end of the school day on the due date to complete their A.R. test. Upon the completion of the A.R. book, the student will complete a computerized quiz. A.R. tests count as an assessment grade in the grade book worth 100 points each. Every Friday, class time is given solely to the reading of A.R. books/taking A.R. tests. Students must select an A.R. book at a level no lower than a 4.0 grade level. If a student needs to complete multiple A.R. quizzes in order to acquire a final higher test score, please note that quiz scores will be averaged together to determine the final score. At the end of the year, A.R. points that have been accumulated throughout the school year may be cashed in for rewards.

On the first day of each week, students will be given a vocabulary worksheet to complete by the last day of the week. Throughout the week, students will also be working on analyzing the textual features both in class and at home in order to comprehend the novel. To help students stay organized, they will need a folder that may stay in class for them to keep all work pertaining to each novel.

On the last day of the week, students will have a vocabulary quiz over the 5-10 words given to them at the beginning of the week. In addition to weekly vocabulary quizzes, students will also complete quizzes and tests throughout each novel, and will have a comprehensive test at the conclusion of each novel.

Extra Credit Opportunity:
Students have the opportunity to earn up to 100 extra credit points within each quarter. Students may select up to four Newsela articles to read and complete a form for extra credit points. For each article form that is completed, the student will receive 25 extra credit points.
